The Sociology of Agricultural Extension
Knowledge Transfer, Social Structures, and Farmer Agency
Book Overview
The Sociology of Agricultural Extension provides a critical examination of the complex social dynamics that underpin rural development and agricultural innovation. Moving beyond traditional, linear models of technology transfer, this book offers a nuanced sociological lens to explore the interplay between knowledge systems, social structures, and farmer agency. The authors delve into the historical evolution of extension services, the social construction of agricultural knowledge, and the pivotal roles of trust, power, and institutional frameworks in shaping outcomes.
By analyzing barriers to adoption, the importance of indigenous knowledge, and the challenges of the digital divide, the book argues for a shift towards more participatory, inclusive, and context-sensitive extension paradigms. It is an essential resource for students, academics, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand and build more equitable and effective support systems for a resilient and sustainable agricultural future.
