This book offers a comprehensive analysis of Han Kang’s acclaimed novel, The Vegetarian. Through a deep exploration of the protagonist Yeong-hye’s radical rejection of societal norms, the authors dissect the intricate interplay between bodily autonomy, psychological trauma, and the repressive forces of patriarchal culture. The analysis is structured around several thematic pillars—including the catalyst of rebellion, the manifestation of repressed trauma through violent dreams, the potent role of silence as non-verbal defiance, and the disintegration of domestic bonds—that together elucidate how Yeong-hye’s personal transformation becomes a microcosm for broader socio-political critiques. By tracing the evolution of Yeong-hye’s transformation from compliant wife to an isolated figure challenging the very fabric of familial and societal expectations, the book unveils the ecofeminist and existential dimensions underpinning her struggle. It argues that her act of vegetarianism is not merely a dietary choice but a profound statement of resistance against systems that commodify and control female bodies. The authors also highlight the complex narrative techniques employed by Han Kang, noting how the fragmented perspectives within the novel mirror the fractured realities of modern identity under relentless patriarchal pressure.
